Basic functions of the RPA tools

Three Functionalities of RPA tools :

  • A bot must be able to interact with other systems through the screen scraping / API integration.
  • A bot must be able to make decisions and determine its actions based on the entries obtained from other systems.
  • A bot must have an interface to program the bot.

Types of RPA tools

Each tool in the list can be segregated into 4 different types of tools that are built as the extension of the previous generation of bots. The following are the 4 types of robotic process automation tools in the market:

  • Before the RPA generation entered the scene, small businesses automated simple processes with simple hacks, excel automation and macros. Neither scalable nor reliable, they increased the productivity of humans.
  • After that, bots of programmable solutions were launched. These interacted with other systems and required specific inputs.
  • Then the self-learning tools were developed. These tools saw the humans in action, understood the process and then took advantage of the platform to perform those same actions.
  • Finally, cognitive or intelligent automation robots increase self-learning robots with advanced functions to handle unstructured information and make decisions based on complex and unstructured information.

Checklist for selecting RPA tools

  • Technology: Many organizations perform their daily tasks outside the local desktop using Citrix or virtual machines. Therefore, the tool must be independent of the platform and must be compatible with any type of application.
  • Scalability: The selection of an RPA tool must include the speed and ease with which the tool can respond to commercial requirements, changes, exceptions or increasing operations.
  • Security: One of the important parameters to consider is security. RPA tools are a piece of software in which you need to measure the implementation of security controls.
  • Total cost of ownership: This includes the cost of the initial RPA system configuration, the provider’s license fees and the maintenance cost. All these costs should be considered when you want to select a tool for your work.
  • Ease of use and control: The RPA tool you choose should be easy to use to increase efficiency and employee satisfaction. In addition, easy-to-use solutions require less training and are easier to control.
  • Supplier experience: Choose a supplier that serves a company similar to yours, both in terms of size and industry. This type of experience drastically improves the speed of implementation by reducing the work required to implement the RPA software.
  • Maintenance and support: The provider must follow a support model to guarantee compliance with the required service level agreements.
  • Rapid implementation: The tool must be able to help as a real end user when interacting with applications in the presentation layer, through the use of screens, validation and business rules as they are presented through a virtual desktop.
